Hands-on with Motorola's green "Renew" phone

I have to say, it's been years since I bothered to test a handset as basic as the Renew. Then again, it's not every day I get to review a cell phone made out of recycled water bottles.

Announced during CES and available now on T-Mobile ($9.99 with a two-year contract, or $59.99 without), the three-ounce Renew is not exactly, how shall I say … packed with features.

No Bluetooth. No GPS. No video player. No camera. Wi-Fi? Please. Oh, by the way—2002 called, and it wants its 1.6-inch, 128 by 128-pixel display back.

That said, you'll be hard-pressed to find a greener handset than the Renew, starting with its brown cardboard package (made from post-consumer recycled paper) and ending with its plastic, green-and-black casing, which is both molded out of recycled water bottles—there's a first—and also "entirely recyclable," according to Motorola.

And while the Renew's features are indeed basic—just a bare-bones WAP browser and MP3 player, a few low-tech games, a basic calendar and address book—Motorola clearly took pains to get the basics right.

Example: Call quality on the CrystalTalk-enabled Renew is notably impressive, with callers sounding loud—way loud, actually, especially over the speakerphone—and clear. I didn't notice any echoing or drop-outs during my tests, although your mileage may vary depending on local coverage (and I've certainly heard my share of complaints from T-Mobile subscribers). Moto promises a whopping nine hours of talk time on a single charge, and yes—the Renew works with T-Mobile's MyFaves plan (good for unlimited calling to any five friends).

I was also surprised to find a microSD slot for memory expansion behind the Renew's battery, good for storing MP3s for playback over the music player (a wired stereo headset with a 2.5mm jack comes in the box). Again, don't expect an equalizer or album art, but there are shuffle and repeat modes available, and you can play tunes in the background while you perform other phone functions (a deceptively simple trick missing on many of the pricier "multimedia" phones I've tested).

Now, that's not to say everything's rosy with the Renew. Its sound is loud and clear, all right, but it tends toward the tinny side, and I was bummed by the lack of a physical, dedicated volume rocker on the side of the phone (you must used the four-way navigational pad to tweak the volume, which can be awkward when the handset is pressed against your ear). Meanwhile, Web browsing over the GPRS-only data connection is painfully slow. And yes, T-Mobile offers several cheaper (as in, free) phones with sharper displays and more features.

That said, the Renew is a statement phone as well as a basic one—indeed, Motorola promises to invest in renewable-energy sources to compensate for the carbon emissions involved in building and distributing the handset. (There's even a postage-paid envelope in the box for sending your old phone to a recycling center.) If you're looking for the equivalent of a hybrid car in the world of cell phones, well ... this is it.

"Sex, Lies And Texting "

If you’ve ever watched “Meet the Parents” or the TV Series “Alias”, you probably know a thing about how to read people. Watch where their eyes go, read their body language, listen to the tone of their voice ? it will all give you little clues to tell if they’re sincere, if they’re lying, if they’re interested in you or if they are just bored.

Unfortunately, today’s dating scene in the Philippines comes with one secret weapon designed to break you down: TEXTING. A text message has no body language and no tone, it’s just flat words on a shiny screen on your cellphone. So how do you read a text without having a day long agony-fest over what it actually means?

Here’s a quick guided for what she’s actually saying.

Periods. Anytime she writes a period at the end of the text (when the otherwise general lack of words would suffice to show that the thought is over) she’s one of two things: demanding or pissed off, probably at you. If you’re getting a lot of them, it’s a safe conclusion that you are in trouble. Like this text message “Aalis ako.”

Exclamation Point! This is a universal sign of excitement; it means she wants you to immediately picture her smiling and eager, like "Watch tayo movie maya!”. Generally a good thing, unless she’s cursing you.

Question Mark? Obviously, questions needs appropriate punctuation; especially in texts were there is no tone. Frequent question marks ? especially when there isn’t really a question, like “Alis ba tayo later?” , means she’s building up some serious insecurities about your relationship.

What’s Up? or Musta? If this is all the text says, it means she’s trying to “get-in” without being demanding. It’s a conversation starter that she hopes you’ll answer and ask her back the same question. She’s playing it cool but wants you to be thinking about her.

Later or Text Text Na Lang. If she’s your buddy, “later or text text na lang” is totally standard. If she’s your leading lady then it is not good. Think about it ? there’s “maya na lang”, “text kita later” and all sorts of ways of making plans in very casual ways, but she’s going our her way to be brief and noncommittal. Not a very good sign for you.

Ummmm… We say “umm” naturally in conversation at some point in time, but it’s different if she’s going out of her way to write it down. Whatever you just asked her, she doesn’t want to do it and she’s sincerely hoping you’ll take the hint.

Most often than not, the meaning of the words I mentioned are true and applies to the greater majority of Pinays. So girls, don’t make it hard for us, if you really want to communicate by text, say what you mean. It’s so much simpler that way. Text Text Text Ting!

"Tips And Tricks For Your Mobile Phone"

Mobile phones are widely used for communication, business, etc. But are you aware of what other things your phone can do or provide you of? Here are some facts you may want to look at.

Originality of your Mobile Phone

Mobile phones have its unique IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) that confirms the originality of your cell phone. To get the IEMI of your mobile phone just press the following *#06#and the international mobile equipment identity. Then check the 7th and 8th numbers:

1234567th8th9101112131415
Phone serial no.xxxxxx??xxxxxxx

IF the Seventh and Eight digits are 02 or 20 this means your cell phone was assembled in Emirateswhich is very Bad Quality.

IF the Seventh and Eight digits are 08 or 80 this means your cell phone was manufactured inGermany which is Fair Quality.

IF the Seventh and Eight digits are 01 or 10 this means your cell phone was manufactured inFinland which is Very Good.

IF the Seventh and Eight digits are 00 this means your cell phone was manufactured in original factory which is the Best Mobile Quality.

IF the Seventh and Eight digits are 13 this means your cell phone was assembled in Azerbaijanwhich is very bad quality and also dangerous for your health.

In Case of Emergency

There are a few things that can be done in times of grave emergencies. Your mobile phone can actually be a life saver or an emergency tool for survival.

Check out the things that you can do with it:

1. EMERGENCY

*The Emergency Number worldwide for **Mobile** is 112..* If you find yourself out of coverage area of your mobile network and there is an emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing network to establish the emergency number for you, and interestingly this number 112 can be dialed even if the keypad is locked.

Try it out.

2. Have you locked your keys in the car? Does your car have remote keys?

This may come handy someday. Good reason to own a cell phone:

If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at home, call someone at home on their cell phone from your cell phone. Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the mobile phone on their end. Your car will unlock.

Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other 'remote' for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk).

3. Hidden Battery Power

Imagine your cell battery is very low, you are expecting an important call and you don't have a charger.Nokia instrument comes with a reserve battery. To activate, press the keys *3370. Your cell will restart with this reserve and the instrutment will show a 50% increase in battery. This reserve will get charged when you charge your cell next time.

4. How to disable a STOLEN mobile phone?

To check your Mobile phone's serial number, key in the following digits on your phone:*#06#

A 15 digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to your handset. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe. When your phone get stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They will then be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless.

You probably won't get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever stole it can't use/sell it either. If everybody does this, there would be no point of people stealing mobile phones.

"How GPS Phones Work"

Imagine driving to a job interview and realizing that you're lost. Your first impulse would probably be to call the business that's interviewing you and ask for directions. But if you're not sure where you are, getting directions can be tricky.

But suppose you use your phone for another purpose -- to figure out exactly where you are and to get turn-by-turn directions to where you're going. New phones that include global positioning system (GPS) receivers can do exactly that. With the right software or service package, they can pinpoint your location, give directions to your destination and provide information about nearby businesses.

Cell Phone Basics

A cell phone is basically a sophisticated two-way radio. Towers and base stations, arranged into a network of cells, send and receive radio signals. Cell phones contain low-power transmitters that let them communicate with the nearest tower. As you travel, you move from one cell to another, and the base stations monitor the strength of your phone's signal. As you move toward the edge of one cell, your signal strength diminishes. At the same time, the base station in the cell you are approaching notices the strength of your signal increasing. As you move from cell to cell, the towers transfer your signal from one to the next.As you travel, the signal is passed from cell to cell.

In remote locations, towers may be so far apart that they can't provide a consistent signal. Even when towers are plentiful, mountains and tall buildings can interrupt their signals. Sometimes people have a hard time getting clear signals inside buildings, especially in elevators.Even without a GPS receiver, your cell phone can provide information about your location. A computer can determine your location based on measurements of your signal, such as:

* Its angle of approach to the cell towers
* How long it takes the signal to travel to multiple towers
* The strength of your signal when it reaches the towers

Since obstacles like trees and buildings can affect how long it takes your signal to travel to a tower, this method is often less accurate than a GPS measurement.

GPS Receiver Basics

Like a cell phone, a GPS receiver relies on radio waves. But instead of using towers on the ground, it communicates with satellites that orbit the Earth. There are currently 27 GPS satellites in orbit -- 24 are in active use and 3 act as a backup in case another satellite fails. In order to determine your location, a GPS receiver has to determine:

* The locations of at least three satellites above you
* Where you are in relation to those satellites

The receiver then uses trilateration to determine your exact location. Basically, it draws a sphere around each of three satellites it can locate. These three spheres intersect in two points -- one is in space, and one is on the ground. The point on the ground at which the three spheres intersect is your location. A GPS receiver has to have a clear line of sight to the satellite to operate, so dense tree cover and buildings can keep it from getting a fix on your location.GPS receivers and cell phones have a lot in common, and both are very popular. In the next section, we'll look at some of the features of GPS-enabled cell phones.

Wireless-Assisted GPS

Some GPS phones use wireless-assisted GPS to determine the user's location. In wireless-assisted systems, the phone uses the orbiting GPS satellites in conjunction with information about the cell phone's signal. Sometimes called enhanced GPS, wireless-assisted GPS can often get a fix on the user's location faster than a GPS-only receiver. Some wireless-assisted systems can work inside buildings, under dense foliage and in city areas where traditional receivers cannot receive signals. You can learn more about wireless-assisted GPS through Lucent Technologies.

GPS Phones

Nearly all new cell phones sold in America have some GPS receiving capability built in. Those that don't can connect to a server that uses techniques discussed in the last section to analyze their signals and determine their location. This allows the phones to transmit a person's location to a Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) after dialing 911. But that's all a lot of phones can do with their GPS.However, some phones have a complete GPS receiver located in the phone or can connect to one with wires or through a Bluetooth connection. These GPS-enabled phones can understand programming languages like Java and can provide turn-by-turn directions or information about nearby businesses and attractions. Others can work like a tracking device. To use any of these features, you must have:

* A GPS-enabled phone or a compatible GPS receiver
* A calling plan that supports transmission of maps and GPS data
* A service plan or software that provides the actual maps and directions or provides information about the phone's location

"Why Not Use Technology To Save The Planet?"

Technological advances in the past decade have been nothing but impressive. People have incorporated so much of technology in their lives that imagining independence from it seems impossible. Point and case, picture how difficult it would be to make communication transactions without a mobile phone or internet access. The idea of it is just frustrating! Can you imagine manually sending office documents to all your clients all the time? Will you still feel secure knowing that the next call you have to make to a loved one on an emergency situation has to wait until you find your self near a landline? Those scenarios seem so far from the realm of technology that we live in today, we’ve got machines doing manual labor for us, and just when we thought that we would always have the edge over computers in terms of “thinking”, programs that can plan everything from your floor layout, to your personal schedule are born, and once again, humans succumb to the convenience of technology, give in and allow them to take over our lives. With all the advantages offered by technology, why don’t we push our luck much further and consider developing something to help ease the irreversible damages we’ve inflicted on Mother Earth? We’ve gone so far as creating robots to cater to the beckoned call of man, why not technology that can alleviate the planet’s destruction?

Realistically speaking, the Earth cannot be destroyed by man. Let’s not get ahead of our selves. Sure humans are both genius and ingenious but our egos will fall face first on the floor if we keep claiming that we have the power to make the planet disintegrate. Why so? Just like the human body has the capacity to regenerate and heal its self, the earth to has the capacity to self-repair and outlast us all. All the harmful things we do to mother earth just make the planet NOT conducive to human habitation. In short, we’re plotting for OUR destruction, not the earth’s. When we destroy our natural resources, we just inch our way to human annihilation. All the earth has to do is pull off another ice age and she’s bound to go back to tip-top shape. We, on the other hand, have to go extinct in the process. Isn’t the truth even scarier? When we care for the planet, we do humans more of a favor than the planet. So instead of thinking that we have to save the earth, think “Save Your Self”.

We’ve placed a satellite outside the earth and got it to float around space. We’ve sent space ships to the moon, we’ve created the internet, we’ve even made long distance relationships possible through live streaming, online calls and 24 hour delivery services from one continent to the other. Surely doing good to the planet is also a sound tech advancement investment, right?

Why not build more solar panels that can be sent to space to absorb more heat and have it resend the power supply back to earth? Don’t think this idea is bogus, it’s the same concept as your TV. Networks send signals to outer space and zap it back to your living room.

We can also develop technology that filters large volumes of water so that we can clean up our rivers and lakes. We do it in the faucet with our purifiers, we can just think in a much bigger scale!

What about inventing cars that are no longer dependent on gas? It can utilize solar power during the day, aided by electricity, and then at night, it can run on dirty water. Yeah, yeah, its more of a dream than an actual development proposal, but it cannot be impossible! After all, we have had people survive in zero gravity situations, this task should be a breeze!

In recent years, Japan has made efforts to develop technology that can assist environmental causes. Actual plans of sending solar panels to space are underway. But should we really be depending on just one country to make the moves when every single person in every single country is contributing to environmental deterioration?

It’s a fact that we have the brains to think of brilliant ideas to save ourselves from complete inexistence. We have the resources, the energy, the cause and the skills. We’re just not allocating any time to do something. Neither is the government prioritizing this urgent need. National governments the world over are run by supposedly brilliant men and women who talk politics and economics all the time. What they don’t realize is that all their efforts to supposedly “make the future brighter” will be in vain when no one gets to live to see it because our time on earth ran out.

Please urge everyone around you to conserve resources, take an active role in promoting green-living and act positively on nature’s behalf. Do paperless transactions in the office, use energy-saving bulbs, use up less gas for transportation, buy less plastic and plant more trees. These are small things that we can do manually now, at least until we can develop the right technology that will help us save the earth… I mean, “save ourselves”

BUHAY AMERIKA

Revealing Headphone and Car-Kit Menus

Think about this: If you do these tricks the new menus can not be erased after the procedure. But it's not dangerous or harmful for your phone

To enable the headset-function, you have to short-circuit the "3" and "4". After a short time there is "Headset" on the display Now, menu 3-6 is now enabled!

To enable the carkit-function you have to short-circuit the "4" and "5". After a short time, "Car" is shown on the display and the menu 3-7 is enabled!!

This Trick is for you how want to hear more then your supposed to !

If you short-circuit the left and the right contact with the middle contact ("3", "6" and "9") the Nokia Software hangs! The profile "Headset" will be activated. Before you do this, just active the "auto call receive" function in the headphone profile and set the ringing volume to "mute" Now you can use your phone for checking out what people are talking about in a room. Place the phone somewhere stratidic and call your phone! The phone receives the call without ringing and you can listen to what people are talking about! .....gr8...

Serial numbers on your 6110

For more info type: *#92702689#
The first screen gives you the serial and IMEI number.
Then there is the Date of Manufacture: ex. Made 1297
Then there is the Purchasing Date: ex. Purchasing Date 0298
Then there is the last Repair Date: ex. Repaired: 0000

Note: you must turn off the phone to exit after this test, because of the last function, "transfer user data" which doesn't work as "standard"....You can use this mode only to transfer all Calender, Profile and Callers Group Information to another phone (eg. if you are replacing phone or configuring phones for use within your company or when a particular phone doesn't works correctly )
